The team includes doctors, midwives, nurses, allied health professionals and support staff working in Cresswell Maternity Wing in Dumfries and the Clenoch Birthing Centre in Stranraer. Staff also work in the community e.g. attending satellite clinics in outlying areas. Whilst team midwives work in both hospital and community.
The overall care of women with uncomplicated pregnancies is provided by midwives who work in teams and deliver all aspects of care. The red and blue teams cover the Dumfries and Upper Nithsdale areas, yellow cover Stewartry, orange Annandale and Eskdale and green Wigtownshire.
The majority of care is provided within the community, during pregnancy and in the post natal period. Home births are supported and women in Wigtownshire have the option of giving birth at the Clenoch Birth Centre if they choose. The majority of births still take place in Cresswell Maternity Wing in Dumfries.
The two main Maternity Units in Dumfries and Galloway are Cresswell Maternity Unit at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary and the Clenoch Birthing Centre at the Galloway Community Hospital, Stranraer.
