Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) and Speech and Language Therapy Support Workers work with Adults who have difficulties with:

  • Swallowing (Dysphagia)
  • Slurred speech (Dysarthria)
  • Language (Dysphasia)
  • Voice (Dysphonia)
  • Stammering (Dysfluency)
  • Dyspraxia

These difficulties may be a result of:

  • Stroke
  • Progressive Neurological conditions (such as M.S, M.N.D or Parkinson’s)
  • Acquired traumatic brain injury
  • Head & neck or other cancers,
  • Functional, organic or transgender voice difficulties
  • Physical disability
  • Mental health, including dementia
  • A range of other conditions (such as deafness or learning disability)

SLTs assess, diagnose, advise and treat adults with speech, language, communication and or swallowing difficulties. They work closely with family and carers and other professionals to ensure the best possible outcome for patients.

Referrals are preferred in writing with:

  • clinical reason for referral
  • accompanying relevant recent medical history
  • current list of medications.

GP’s can make electronic referrals via SCI gateway direct to SLT.

Pre referral guidance and advice can be given by telephone if required.

  • Please note voice difficulty referrals require an ENT referral/assessment prior to SLT intervention (a GP would normally initiate this referral)
  • Referrals for swallowing difficulties require a referral from a health care professional (e.g. GP, Physiotherapist, Dietician, Nurse)
