Building Healthy Communities

Welcome to the Building Healthy Communities NHS website.

BHC's 'Vision' is to be a strong, dynamic partnership, which reduces health inequalities using a community development approach to promote the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, communities and organisations in Dumfries and Galloway.

About

Building Healthy Communities in Dumfries and Galloway is a region wide programme based on the 'Healthy Living Centre' concept and is a partnership of public, community and voluntary organisations that has been working together since 2001. The programme is designed to improve the health and wellbeing and quality of life for all individuals, particularly those who are encountering difficult circumstances and personal issues.

The programme is shaped by a Regional Partnership of strategic/local representation and four local Area Partnerhsips that currently operate across the region. Each of the Area Partnerships pool their resources and take collective action to tackle local community health issues in a co-ordinated and inclusive way which is pivotal to tackle the root causes of ill health.

Building Healthy Communities uses a co-ordinated community development approach to:

  • create a range of opportunities for local people and communities
  • encourage active local participation
  • prepare individuals for volunteering through training and one-to-one support
  • promote healthy lifestyles
  • enable individuals to be active citizens within their own community
  • outreach people through the development and implementation of a range of healthy initiatives that address local needs
  • develop effective partnership working and capacity building of individuals, organisations and communities
  • focus on 'first step' social support aimed at individuals dealing with anxiety, stress, depression, isolation, lack of self esteem and substance misuse
  • empower Volunteers and the wider community to improve their own health and social wellbeing
