Health Improvement Annandale & Eskdale are part of the Local Health Partnership (LHP). We have a small team based at Sonas, within the grounds of Annan Hospital. We work closely with our colleagues within the NHS and with partners from within the statutory and voluntary sector, local communities and groups. Our key aim is to improve the health and well-being of people living and working in Annandale & Eskdale and to contribute to reducing health inequalities in the locality.
WHAT DO WE DO?
We work with key partners to raise awareness, educate and build capacity in health improvement in the locality. Support in the development and delivery of evidence based health projects and initiatives. Support the development and work of the Safe & Healthy Action Partnership (SHAP) in building safer, healthier communities.
The team are based in Sonas, in the grounds of Annan Hospital. The building was a former Day Hospital, now renamed Sonas meaning 'happiness and well-being' in Scottish Gaelic. The name was chosen to raise awareness and demonstrate that health is much wider than just the absence of disease. It is about our lives, the choices we have and make, our education, employment opportunities, the environment, access to services, the people we have to support us, and how we feel about ourselves. These are just a few of the things that can impact greatly upon our health, well-being and quality of life.
This is an exciting development within the LHP and there are many benefits of having a team based within the locality:
Staff are accessible and are known to the NHS workforce locally.
They can work closely with partners and within the communities they are trying to reach
Local needs are identified and reflected in planning and service delivery.
They can play a key role in ensuring health improvement issues are continually considered and addressed through local community planning.
Annandale & Eskdale is the first LHP area to create a locality base dedicated to health improvement. This has shown real commitment and forward thinking in terms of long term health gain. The base itself has created many benefits including:-
Access to current health information through reports, local statistics and health websites, through the health information library
Provision of a base for partners eg. Smoking Matters & Let's Cook Workers, allowing closer working relations and communication with other agencies and disciplines leading to more joint working opportunities.
A free meeting room facility encouraging staff, local organisations and groups to access the service, find out more about what we do.
Access to health information and resources in our library
