NHS Dumfries and Galloway Smoke Free Policy

To give all patients, visitors and staff the best chance to be healthy all NHS Dumfries and Galloway buildings and grounds will be smoke free from 1st April 2015. This is a Scottish Government requirement which all NHS Boards are required to implement.

NHS Dumfries and Galloway has a Smoke Free Policy which aims to support healthy lifestyle choices and the duty of care that the Board has for patients and staff. This Policy will come into effect from 1st April 2015 and renews the commitment of NHS Dumfries and Galloway to provide a smoke free environment.

Smoking on hospital grounds, particularly near main entrances, is not acceptable for those that have to walk through these areas. The smoke drifts through windows which is unpleasant for staff and patients nearby. We recognise that the majority of smokers do not smoke hospitals grounds and over 80% of staff, patients and visitors support the move towards smoke free grounds. Our aim is to create a culture of no smoking on our grounds that applies to and is followed by all.

As there is no safe level of contact with tobacco smoke, smokers are being asked to give the best opportunity to protect and benefit others by leaving the grounds to smoke.

To support the creation of an environment that supports healthy lifestyle choices all NHS Dumfries and Galloway sites including buildings and grounds will be smoke-free from 1st April 2015.

Support for people who want to stop smoking

Going into hospital, whether for an operation or due to another health reason can be a very stressful time and you may not think this is a good time to quit. However, it can be an excellent time to quit, as you are out of your normal routine and it is an opportunity to break the cycle of addiction to nicotine in tobacco.

The Quit Your Way Service offers smokers throughout Dumfries and Galloway help in stopping smoking.

How does the Smoking Matters Service work?

An appointment will be arranged for you to meet with one of our advisers who will provide you with advice and support to help you achieve your goal to stop smoking. You will meet with one of our advisers in a Health Care Setting, e.g. your local GP surgery or Community Setting. Appointments are normally on a one-to-one basis which last a maximum of 30 minutes. If this does not suit we also run groups in some areas.

Hospital Adviser

We have an adviser who attends Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary and Crichton Royal Hospital. If you are an inpatient and would like to see the adviser please contact the service directly or ask a member of staff and this can be arranged for you.

How do I arrange an appointment?

You can contact Smoking Matters directly on 0845 602 6861 and the admin team will take your personal details and organise an appointment for you if possible. You can also email dg.smokingmatters@nhs.net  or text on 07736 955 211 and someone will get back to you.
