Princess Royal Trust for Carers Hospital Carers Support Project

PRT LogoA Carer is someone who looks after a partner, child, relative or friend with an illness or disability or addiction who otherwise couldn't manage without their help.

A Young Carer is a child or young person affected by the illness, disability or addiction problems of a family member. Young Carers are often responsible for a great deal of their own care as well as the tasks of caring for their family member. This can have a substantial impact on all areas of their life including their education.

Anyone can become a Carer at any time, often without the luxury of choice. Caring for someone is an important and valuable role in our community which can be a 24 hour job, 7 days a week. Many people do not recognise themselves as Carers and consequently miss out on information, services, support and financial assistance that they are entitled to.

If you or the person that you care for is in hospital, please contact our Hospital Carers Support Coordinators Lindsay Sim & Sharron McGonigle currently based at Portacabin 4 outside the Alexandra Unit. Turn left out of Outpatients, then left again and our Portacabin is the fourth one on the left.

Hospital Carers Support Coordinators are available on the following days:

Tuesday & Wednesday 10.00am till 3.00pm
Thursday 3.00pm till 8.00pm and Friday 10.00am till 3.00pm

They can be contacted on 01387 241384 or internally on 33384

Alternatively, we have Outreach Carers Support Workers who cover the whole of the Dumfries & Galloway area. They can contact you and arrange to visit you at your home.

DGRI staff can also access the service through our intranet page which comes under 'Services'.
