NHS D&G have now received approval to develop a plan for a new build hospital in Dumfries. This is a really exciting opportunity for Dumfries and Galloway. The decision by the Scottish Government is the biggest ever single investment (about £200 million) in healthcare for our region.
What does this mean?
This means we can go ahead and plan to build a new DGRI.
Why do we need a new Hospital?
The current building has been maintained to as high a standard as possible. Whilst the building does look good, we now need to renew the electrics, plumbing and heating, medical gases, and the nurse call systems. New fire standards also need to be met.
Due to changes in room standards, if we refurbished the old building we would be unable to replace the same number of beds, i.e. 30 bed ward could only accommodate 16 beds. The noise and dust would be very disruptive to clinical services. Car parking would also be affected.
A refurbishment would have to be funded by capital money - and we do not have enough capital to pay for this.
How does this affect our local cottage hospitals?
The NHS Board have no plans to close its cottage hospitals . It may be possible to re-locate DGRI to a site which will cut transfer times between DGRI and Cottage Hospitals.
How many single rooms will the new hospital have?
The new hospital will be all single rooms but it will include spaces where people can socialise.
Timescales
The current timetable for the project expects the initial business case to be completed by early summer 2012.
Building would commence end of 2013 with the new building expected to be completed by 2016/17.

If we can’t afford a re-furbishment then how can we afford a new build?
The Government is now funding large projects through what is known as the Non Profit Distributing (NPD) model. This means that money is provided by outside organisations, which are able to make a capped profit on their investment. The money is paid back over approximately 25 years.
Why can’t we spend the money on more doctors and nurses?
The money the Government is providing is only for a new Hospital. It cannot be used for anything else.
What about Cresswell and the Dental Centre?
The Dental Centre will remain where it is. Maternity Services would move to the new building so we are looking at different options for the Cresswell building.
Where will the new hospital be?
D&G Council have helped us identify a number of potential sites, including building a new hospital on the current site.
A final decision will be based on a number of factors including accessibility, flood risk, contamination, traffic impact, and the views of the public.
